Wentworth-Douglass Hospital Earns the Outstanding Achievement Award for Cancer Care
This award recognizes cancer programs that achieve excellence in compliance to the CoC Standards and provide the highest quality care to cancer patients.
Wentworth-Douglass Hospital's Seacoast Cancer Center was recently awarded the 2016 Outstanding Achievement Award by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Commission on Cancer (CoC). Wentworth-Douglass is one of a select group of only 42 U.S. accredited cancer programs – and the only one in New Hampshire – to receive this national honor for surveys conducted in 2016.
The award recognizes those cancer programs that achieve excellence meeting the CoC standards. The purpose of the award is to encourage cancer programs to raise the bar on quality cancer care with the ultimate goal of increasing awareness about high quality, patient-centered care.
“This recognition by the Commission on Cancer affirms our dedication to offering patients the best cancer care,” says Dr. Barbara Civiello, medical oncologist and chair of Wentworth-Douglass Hospital’s Cancer Committee. “The Seacoast Cancer Center touches the lives of so many people in our community. We are pleased we can offer the highest quality care with advanced treatments and expertise - and make it available to people right here on the Seacoast.”
Wentworth-Douglass’s Seacoast Cancer Center was evaluated on 34 program standards categorized within five cancer program activity areas: cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical services, patient outcomes, and data quality. The cancer center was further evaluated on seven commendation standards. Wentworth-Douglass received commendation ratings in all seven commendation standards in addition to receiving a compliance rating for each of the 27 other standards to earn the Outstanding Achievement Award.
Wentworth-Douglass is accredited as a Comprehensive Community Cancer Center by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. Only 12 percent of CoC accredited cancer programs received the Outstanding Achievement Award.
The Seacoast Cancer Center provides comprehensive cancer care with advanced medical and radiation oncology programs, immunotherapy and targeted therapy, and supportive and wellness services. It also offers clinically affiliated programs with Massachusetts General Hospital in medical oncology, gynecologic oncology, cancer genetics and clinical trials.
