Wentworth-Douglass names Jeffrey Hughes, Chief Operating Officer

Wentworth-Douglass Hospital has named Jeffrey Hughes, MPH, FACHE, as Chief Operating Officer (COO). In this newly created position, Hughes will lead the Organization’s core services, with a focus on its continued commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centered healthcare to people across the Seacoast. 

Hughes has more than 35 years of professional experience in healthcare strategy and clinical business development. Prior to becoming COO, he served as Vice President of Operations and Chief Strategy Officer at Wentworth-Douglass, steering the Hospital through a period of tremendous strategic growth.

During his tenure at Wentworth-Douglass, Hughes has been integral in major initiatives, including the integration with Massachusetts General Hospital, the development of new clinical services lines, and the opening and growth of the Portsmouth Outpatient Center. In this new COO role, his priority focus will be on the delivery of Hospital’s core clinical services and ensuring the community’s access to high-quality care.

Before joining Wentworth-Douglass, Hughes held the positions of Vice President of Planning at Holy Family Hospital, Senior Manager of Business Planning at Mass General Brigham, and Director of Healthcare Consulting with PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP. Hughes is also actively involved in the community, currently serving on the Board of the Greater Dover (NH) Chamber of Commerce and as Vice Chairman of the New Castle, NH, Historic District Commission.

Hughes received a Master’s Degree in Public Health from the Yale University School of Public Health, and a Bachelor’s Degree with honors from Boston University. He is board certified in healthcare management as a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
