26th Annual Wentworth-Douglass Charity Classic Raises a Record $230,000

The 26th Annual Wentworth-Douglass Hospital Charity Classic, presented by Tufts Health Freedom Plan, raised more than $230,000, an increase of 21% over 2019 proceeds. The sold-out golf tournament, held at the Cochecho Country Club in Dover on August 11 in sweltering heat and humidity, supports comprehensive services for women and families at the Wentworth-Douglass Women & Children’s Center.

The winning foursome represented Bangor Savings Bank and included Eric Beauregard, Richie Stover, Josh Trivilino, and Michael Whitman. The second-place team was John Burnham, James Burnham, Dick Conley, and David Della Penta.  The third-place team was Jim Bingham, Ryan Fernald, Bill Greenier, and Sean Lewis.

Since the tournament’s inception in 1994, the Wentworth-Douglass Charity Classic has raised nearly $1.5 million to support valuable pediatric programs and services. New this year was an online auction, featuring items such as New England Patriots tickets, Weber Grill and trips to the Caribbean and Italy. For those not able to participate in person, the online auction drew bidders from across the country.

This year’s fundraising total included $20,000 raised during the tournament’s Fund-A-Need Program to help establish a TeleNewborn Consult Program for the Women & Children’s Center. Charity Classic participants generously supported the Fund-A-Need and generated 30% more revenue to support this program.

The TeleNewborn Consult program will allow clinical staff at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital’s Birth Center to communicate vital signs and conduct an exam of a newborn while consulting virtually with a neonatology expert at Massachusetts General Hospital. This new program will help certain babies who would normally need a higher level of care be able to stay with their family and be treated at Wentworth-Douglass, under the close watch of Mass General neonatology experts and Wentworth-Douglass Hospital’s clinical staff.

“Wentworth-Douglass Hospital delivers nearly 50-percent of all babies here in the Seacoast, with more than 1,300 deliveries in 2019. Over the past few years we have been seeing more high-risk newborns and therefore our fundraising priorities for newborn care and programming through the Charity Classic adapt as our patient’s needs change.  The funds raised through the Charity Clasic help provide our most fragile young patients with a healthy start and I am incredibly proud to have witnessed the growth of this event,” says Dr. Paul Cass, Wentworth-Douglass’s Chief Medical Officer and member of the Charity Classic Committee.
