Seventh Annual Seacoast Cancer 5K Celebrates Virtual Debut Success

The 2020 Seacoast Cancer 5K was held in a virtual format from Saturday, September 19 through Sunday, October 4, and raised more than $260,000. A closing ceremony was held outside at Somersworth Nissan on Sunday, October 4, featuring Honorary 5K Captain and Boston hoops favorite, Brian Scalabrine, who closed out the “Anytime 5K” by completing a final lap with cancer survivors: Beth Brownell, Rae Ann Chrane, Debra Fennessy, and David Watters. Top fundraisers and Top finishers were honored along with new award categories such as “Going the Extra Mile,” for the participant from the farthest distance away and 5K Rockstar Awards for each participant who raised more than $500.

The top overall 5K finisher was Luke O’Halloran of Lee, N.H. with a time of 17:31. The top female finisher was Megan Giguere of Dover, N.H. with a time of 21:01. “We are so grateful and impressed with our community and race participants who have rallied to support local cancer care despite the pivot to a virtual event. The Seacoast Cancer Center staff never stopped provided lifesaving care to patients during the pandemic and the patients and staff at the Cancer Center need our support now more than ever. We are truly amazed at the level of engagement we received from the local business community, runners, and walkers. We are so appreciative to everyone in our community who supported Wentworth-Douglass in the Seacoast Cancer 5K and throughout the pandemic,” said Interim CEO and COO, Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, Jeffrey Hughes, MPH, FAHCE.

Proceeds from the Seacoast Cancer 5K stay in the community to support lifesaving care and services for patients with cancer and their families at the Seacoast Cancer Center. The Cancer Center offers the most comprehensive cancer care in the area, with medical and radiation oncology, specialty cancer clinics, genetic counseling, clinical trials, rehabilitation, survivorship and wellness programs.
