Massachusetts General Hospital Collaborations

Epilepsy Clinic

World-class epilepsy care is available right here on the Seacoast. Through Wentworth-Douglass Hospital’s affiliation with Massachusetts General Hospital, patients will have direct access to expect sub-specialty care for epilepsy and related disorders.

Coastal Neurology’s Epilepsy Clinic, led by Mass General Neurologist Daniel Hoch, MD, PhD, provides consultation, diagnosis, testing and EEG monitoring, and disease management to improve the lives and health of patients experiencing seizures.

Small-Fiber Polyneuropathy

Dr. Khosro Farhad works in collaboration with Mass General's Dr. Anne Louise Oaklander to research and treat dysfunction of a specific type of peripheral nerve cells, the “small fibers.” These neurons, outside the brain and spinal cord, can’t be seen under a microscope and aren’t detected by common nerve damage tests.

Through this collaboration, Coastal Neurology offers skin biopsies for small-fiber neuropathy that are analyzed at Mass General. The two doctors are developing a standardized neurological exam to detect SFPN and enable patients to be tracked to assess the effects of various treatments. Their recent research, published in Therapeutic Advances in Neurological Disorders, discusses an effective treatment of intravenous immunoglobulin that had the potential to improve nerve damage in patients diagnosed with what appeared to be autoimmune SFPN.
