For expectant and new mothers, support systems can be extremely important. Many aspects of motherhood come instinctively, but there are so many other things that you may not know or be prepared for during the early stages of parenthood.
You may find that participating with a group of like-minded women, dealing with the same joys and uncertainties, might actually benefit you and help you along the way. Support groups are a great source of comfort and encouragement, and you can learn more about how other are approaching parenting.
This is also true of breastfeeding.
There are many reasons to breastfeed. Breastmilk is the perfect nutrition for your baby. It’s also beneficial for mothers. Research shows that it can reduce the risk of chronic disease for both mom and baby.
As a designated “Baby-Friendly” Hospital, Wentworth-Douglass is committed to providing the breastfeeding support needed to help you achieve your breastfeeding goals. Every family is supported by caring nurses with extensive breastfeeding education, and board certified lactation consultants are available to support you and answer your questions.
Once you and your baby go home, our lactation consultants are available by phone to offer on-going support.
There are also a number of community and national support groups and resources to help you on your breastfeeding journey. Some of the resources are:
