DOVER, NH – Wentworth-Douglass Hospital has launched its new Center for Weight Management & Bariatric Surgery to help people take steps toward better health through medically-supervised and surgical weight loss programs. The new center will offer the first of its monthly information sessions for people interested in learning more about bariatric surgery on April 18 at 6:30 p.m.
More than a third of Americans struggle with obesity, and sometimes diet and exercise alone are not enough for people to achieve their goals. Weight loss surgery has been proven safe and effective for weight loss and for improving obesity-related conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnea.
Dr. Dmytro M. Havaleshko, a board-certified surgeon specializing in bariatric surgery and minimally-invasive, robotic-assisted laparoscopic abdominal surgeries, has extensive experience performing gastric bypass and vertical sleeve gastrectomy surgeries as the former Director of Bariatric Surgery at Portsmouth Regional Hospital. At Wentworth-Douglass he heads a multidisciplinary care team that includes a psychologist, dieticians, physical therapists and a certified bariatric nurse that prepare patients for successful weight loss journeys.
To qualify for the program, patients must have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or greater, or a BMI of 35-40 with at least one comorbid condition, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
“Patients who choose bariatric surgery have tried over and over to lose weight and often believe it’s not possible for their bodies to lose weight at all,” says Dr. Havaleshko. “Following surgery, patients will experience sustainable weight loss, but it’s the resolution of conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and others that bring the real health benefits. Patients have more energy and overall better health; they feel like they have been given a new life.”
The Center for Weight Management & Bariatric Surgery holds free monthly information sessions that will be held on the third Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital Garrison Auditoriums.
The Center for Weight Management & Bariatric Surgery is located on the first floor of Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover. To register for an upcoming information session or to request more information, please call 833-WD-NEW-ME or visit wdhospital.org/new-me.
