Wentworth-Douglass Hospital earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Hospital Accreditation by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. The Gold Seal is a symbol of quality that reflects a health care organization’s commitment to providing safe and quality patient care.
To achieve accreditation, Joint Commission reviewers evaluated compliance with Hospital Program standards spanning several areas, including environment of care, infection prevention and control, leadership, medication management, and rights and responsibilities of the individual.
For the second consecutive time, Wentworth-Douglass Hospital has achieved Magnet-accreditation from The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet Recognition Program®. It distinguishes organizations that meet rigorous standards for nursing excellence, professionalism, teamwork and superiority in patient care. Wentworth-Douglass Hospital is one of just three New Hampshire hospitals with this distinction and among only 6.2 percent of U.S. hospitals to have achieved Magnet recognition two or more consecutive times.
Wentworth-Douglass Hospital has been named among the best hospitals in the United States, vaulting into the Top 200, according to Newsweek’s 2022 “World’s Best Hospitals” rankings. It was the only hospital on the Seacoast to make the list, jumping 26 spots from its ranking of 217th in 2021. Wentworth-Douglass was ranked 191st among the 441 American hospitals ranked on the publication’s US-based list. There are over 6,000 hospitals in the United States, according to the American Hospital Association.
Wentworth-Douglass Hospital has been named among U.S. News & World Reports’ Best Hospitals for Maternity. The hospital was recognized as ‘High Performing’ in Maternity Care (Uncomplicated Pregnancy). This is the first time U.S. News has published a list of Best Hospitals for Maternity.
Wentworth-Douglass Hospital was named “High Performing” in five Procedures & Conditions, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2022-2023 Best Hospitals rankings.
Wentworth-Douglass earned High Performing ratings in abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart attack, heart failure, and hip fracture. The ratings found the hospital offered care that was significantly better than the national average, as measured by factors such as patient outcomes.
At the 2022 Best of the Seacoast awards gala, Wentworth-Douglass Hospital was named “Best Hospital” for the fifth consecutive year. The hospital's 15 awards, which were spread among a broad range of services and specialties, were more than any other organization, and their 21 nominations were also a new record.
Wentworth-Douglass Hospital is among just 455 hospitals nationwide, and the only one on the Seacoast, to receive a five-star rating in the most recent 2021 ratings from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Just 455 of the more than 3,200 hospitals included in the rankings received 5 stars.
Wentworth-Douglass Hospital is proud to announce that 65 of its doctors have been honored among New Hampshire’s “Top Doctors” by New Hampshire Magazine. These doctors represent 24 specialties across Wentworth-Douglass Hospital and Wentworth Health Partners physician practices. These physicians focus on a wide variety of treatment areas, including everything from family medicine to cardiac electrophysiology. New Hampshire Magazine’s annual “Top Doctors” list is comprised by healthcare research firm Castle Connolly.
Wentworth-Douglass Hospital has been awarded an “A” grade for safety by the Leapfrog Group, an independent, national not-for-profit organization. Wentworth-Douglass received the best possible score in 4 of the 5 categories measured, which included ‘infections’, ‘problems with surgery’, ‘safety problems’, ‘practices to prevent errors’, and ‘doctors, nurses and hospital staff’.
Wentworth-Douglass Hospital was honored for its outstanding care and compassion for patients during an unprecedented global health crisis. The Chamber Collaborative of Greater Portsmouth honored four large businesses in 2021 for their work throughout the pandemic.
Wentworth-Douglass Hospital has been awarded nine 2022 Women’s Choice Awards, including a national rank of 19th among 1,056 hospitals in patient satisfaction. Wentworth-Douglass was honored among “America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Patient Satisfaction” and garnered additional awards for cancer care, heart care, minimally invasive surgery, obstetrics, stroke care, and orthopedics. The hospital’s Breast Health Center in Portsmouth and Women's Life Imaging in Somersworth were both honored for their mammogram centers as well.
Wentworth-Douglass Hospital remains among the best hospitals in the nation for patient experience and has been named a five-star recipient in four separate specialty categories, according to rankings released recently by Healthgrades, a healthcare data company. For the 9th consecutive year, Wentworth-Douglass has been named the recipient of the Outstanding Patient Experience Award and has been ranked among the top 5% in the nation in that category.
The American Heart Association's 2022 Get With the Guidelines Stroke Gold Plus Achievement Award reflects our commitment to offering stroke patients top-quality care that adheres to the latest evidence-based clinical guidelines. Wentworth-Douglass has Advanced Certification as a Primary Stroke Center from The Joint Commission and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.

Wentworth Health Partners has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for Ambulatory Health Care Accreditation and Primary Care Medical Home Certification. This process involves evaluation of each practice office to ensure they provide the highest quality of care to patients according to nationally recognized standards set by The Joint Commission, which accredits and certifies more than 20,500 health care organizations and programs in the United States.
The Wentworth-Douglass Center for Weight Management and Bariatric Surgery is accredited as a Comprehensive Center by the American College of Surgeons, Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP®). MBSAQIP® accreditation recognizes Wentworth-Douglass for meeting the highest standards for safety and quality of care for patients receiving weight loss surgery.
Wentworth-Douglass is one of a select group of 22 U.S. accredited cancer programs to receive this national honor. This award recognizes cancer programs that achieve excellence in compliance to the CoC Standards and provide the highest quality care to cancer patients.

Wentworth-Douglass Hospital has been awarded a three-year accreditation in radiation oncology as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR).
The Center for Heart Health at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital has been granted an additional three-year term of echocardiography accreditation by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC). Echocardiography is used to assess different areas of the heart and can detect heart disease or signs of serious conditions. Accreditation by IAC indicates that Wentworth-Douglass Hospital’s Cardiovascular Care Center has undergone an intensive application and review process. The accreditation was comprised of a detailed self-evaluation, followed by a thorough review by a panel of medical experts.

The Wentworth-Douglass Hospital Emergency Department earned “pediatric ready” status with Always Ready for Children (ARC), a program focused on creating a regional approach to pediatric care to unify care standards across states and allow for collaborative improvements in pediatric readiness.
Hospitals recognized as being “pediatric ready” by a recognition program scored higher on the National Pediatric Readiness Assessment (NPRA), and the establishment of such recognition programs demonstrated pediatric mortality rates four times lower than other hospitals.
Wentworth-Douglass Hospital’s ‘Prevent Type 2 Program’, which targets those most at risk for developing type 2 diabetes, has full accreditation from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
